The German river Saale starts in the Fichtelgebirge in upper Franconia near the city Zell on an elevation of 728 m over sea level. The Saale is 413km long and ends in the river Elbe. You can find very romantic places next to the river and many beautiful cities (see map below). In the 10th century the Saale was the border between France and the Serbs, and in the 12th century it became German territory. There are more than 60 castles along the river and there is no other river in Germany with more castles than the the Saale.
